China cracks whip on int’l matchmaking agencies, paper says

China will crack down on websites and groups promoting marriages between Chinese men and Vietnamese brides, who have become popular among low-income young men in China for being reputedly less materialistic and more obedient, Shanghai Daily reported on Tuesday. Both China and Vietnam ban international matchmaking activities involving their citizens, according to the newspaper. People are not products that can be traded, and such businesses may involve the abduction of women and marriage fraud, Chen Shiqu, director of the Ministry of Public Security’s child trafficking strike office, was quoted as saying. On Nov. 11, Singles Day, more than 28,000 Chinese men signed up for a “lucky draw” promotion by group purchase website 55tuan.com, which promised a round-trip ticket refund for the winner if he succeeds in marrying a Vietnamese woman, the report said.
