China may copy FTZ model to open up border areas, report says

China is likely to copy the free trade zone (FTZ) model to speed up economic opening-up in border areas, the China Securities Journal reported Wednesday, citing Li Jian, a researcher with an agency under the commerce ministry. Piloted FTZ program in Shanghai could serve as a model to be copied by border areas, and even in inland regions, the paper said. Authorities are expected to unveil a plan for further opening up of the economy through 2020 after the third plenum of Communist Party’s 18th Central Committee, which concluded on Tuesday, the report said.
