Govt to set ceiling on solar power subsidies, paper says

China’s solar power industry is expected to increase its generation capacity to 8.5 million to 9 million megawatts this year, regaining the top spot in the world, after subsidies and other support measures from the central government spurred a rebound in the sector, the National Business Daily reported Wednesday. However, He Yongjian, deputy director of the National Energy Administration’s development and planning department, said the central government is planning to set a ceiling on the subsidies in order to promote the healthy development of the industry, which is facing overcapacity problems. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology is believed to be formulating a policy that will promote mergers and acquisitions among industry players, with the goal of nurturing three to five flagship brands that will control 75 percent of the market, the report said.
