The Hebei provincial government is set to implement as many as 50 new policy measures to improve the air quality, aiming to bring down the small particulate matter in cities surrounding Beijing, such as Shijiazhuang, Tangshan, Baoding, Langfang, Dingzhou and Xinji, by 33 percent between 2012 and 2017, Xinhua news agency reported Thursday. By 2017, the small particles level in the entire Hebei province is targeted to be brought down by over 25 percent from the level in 2012. Under the new policies, the province will remove 60 million tons of obsolete steel production capacity by 2017, which will translate to a 40 million tons reduction in coal consumption. Also, as many as 1.05 million motor vehicles that do not meet emission standards will be retired.
