Taiwan not ready for political talks with Beijing, WSJ says

Taiwan has a long way to go in developing economic ties with the Chinese mainland and is not ready for political talks, the Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday, citing former vice president Vincent Siew. Taipei’s approach is economic matters first before political issues, Siew was quoted as saying. In October, Chinese President Xi Jinping told Siew, who was Taiwan’s presidential envoy at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in Bali, Indonesia, that Beijing is eager to move beyond economic issues and conduct political talks with Taiwan, the official Xinhua news agency reported.
