Sport utility vehicles (SUVs) are all the rage in China but by no means are they the only ones people are talking about.
A small but fast-growing segment of multi-purpose vehicles (MPVs) is creating a buzz and inspiring a lot of buying decisions. In October alone, sales surged more than 220 percent.
Unlike SUVs which cater to a certain motoring lifestyle, MPVs are everything to everyone. It’s the kind of vehicle families can pile the kids, the pets and some workshop tools into.
Of course, SUVs are ahead of the curve. According to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, SUV sales grew 73 percent year on year in October. Although sales have slowed, SUVs are not about to lose significant ground anytime soon.
The rise of the MPV highlights a trend among mainstream buyers who are increasingly paying attention to safety, comfort and practicality when buying a car.
The MPV has a spacious cabin, comfortably seating seven people, with enough space left for everything else. It’s the perfect workhorse for family and business.
That puts SAIC Motor Corp. (600104.CN) front and center of the MPV market. Its Wuling Hongguang is not only the best selling MPV but also the monthly sales champion for a single model in the country.
For the second straight month, more than 50,000 units of Wuling Hongguang were sold in October, nearly half of all MPV sales.
