German car makers make green push in China, WSJ says

German car makers are rushing to show their commitment to producing environment-friendly vehicles in China as the nation strives to curb air pollution and lays greater focus on fuel efficiency, the Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday. Volkswagen AG said Wednesday ahead of the opening of an auto show in Guangzhou that it will launch at least 15 plug-in hybrid and electric car models in China by 2018, the paper noted. Local production will start in 2016. BMW AG and local partner Brilliance China Automotive Holdings Ltd. (01114.HK), meanwhile, launched their first Zinoro-branded car, an electric vehicle. In other initiatives, Daimler AG  said it and China’s BYD Co. (002594.CN) will start selling the Denza electric car in 2014.
