Alibaba’s Laiwang adds 10 mln users in Oct, statement says

Alibaba Group’s new mobile-messaging application Laiwang added more than 10 million users in October, the e-commerce giant said in a statement on its website Friday. Alibaba chief executive Jonathan Lu {陸兆禧} attributed Laiwang’s strong growth to its unique features, including a function that allows users to send a voice message that is automatically deleted after the recipient has heard it and a bigger capacity that allows users to form chat groups of up to 500 people. The company is satisfied with Laiwang’s user growth rate as WeChat, the rival application run by Tencent Holdings Ltd. (00700.HK), took five months to reach four to five million users after it launched in January 2011, according to local media. Alibaba is entering the mobile segment not so much to support its e-commerce services as for e-commerce to support mobile services in the next 10 years, Lu was quoted as saying.
