Beijing will release new policies for vehicle license plate lottery system at the end of this month to give more chance for residents who have applied earlier, China National Radio reported late Thursday, citing Liu Xiaoming, director of the capital city’s transportation authority. Beijing aims to keep the total number of vehicles on the road within 6 million units by 2017. The current number is 5.4 million, which means that new vehicle additions per year would be 150,000 during the four years to 2017, down from 240,000 per annum in the past years, the report said. Liu was quoted as saying that a purchase limit policy which was launched in 2009 will be waived in the future, and economic measures, such as higher cost of vehicle ownership, will be in place instead.
