China’s coal use to grow by a third by 2020, Xinhua says

China’s annual coal use will rise by more than a third to 4.8 billion metric tons in 2020 from the 3.52 billion metric tons consumed last year, Xinhua reported on the weekend, citing Liang Jiakun, vice director of the China National Coal Association. Liang said prospects for the domestic coal industry are good because coal still accounted for more than 60 percent of total energy use. But, China’s per-capita coal reserves are still wellbelow the world average, the report said.
