Asian airlines will inform China of their flight plans before entering airspace over waters disputed with Japan, effectively acknowledging Beijing’s authority over a newly declared “Air Defense Identification Zone”, Reuters cited regional aviation officials as saying on Monday. China published coordinates for the zone over the weekend. The area covers most of the East China Sea and the skies over the Diaoyu/Senkaku islands that are at the centre of a row between Beijing and Tokyo. China said the new rules will not affect normal operations for international flights, but added that it will take “defensive emergency measures” against aircraft that failed to identify themselves properly.
