China will formally award on Thursday commercial licenses for fourth-generation mobile services using the TD-LTE technology, Southern Metropolis Daily reported on Wednesday, citing people with knowledge of the matter. However, 4G licenses for the FDD-LTE standard will not come at this time, according to the newspaper. More than one carrier are expected to get the licenses, an analyst was quoted as saying. China Mobile Ltd. (00941.HK) has been providing 4G trial services for users in Guangdong, Beijing and some 320 other cities nationwide. Also, China Telecom Corp. Ltd. (00728.HK) chairman Wang Xiaochu said during an annual general meeting in late May that the company may rent 4G spectrum from China Mobile if it is granted the license, the report said.
