Flight plans ‘not needed’ for new China air zone, Kyodo says

The Japanese government has notified domestic airlines that Beijing’s “Air Defense Identification Zone” over part of the East China Sea does not affect Japan and the carriers can continue to abide by previous rules, Kyodo news agency reported Tuesday, citing Japanese Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga. Suga said China’s move violated the principles of international law and so there is no need for Japanese airlines to submit flight plans for the area. ANA and Japan Airlines, the country’s two biggest carriers, said on Tuesday they will stop reporting flight plans for planes traveling through the zone from Wednesday, the report said.
