Samsung and Xiaomi are the big winners in China’s smartphone market this year while Apple Inc has seen its sales slow in the country, the South China Morning Post reported Thursday, citing a research report from consumer insight firm Kantar Worldpanel. Samsung’s Galaxy line of smartphones helped the Korean firm corner the largest share of the mainland’s mobile market this year, Kantar was quoted as saying in its report. Half of all premium smartphones, referring to phones with a price of at least 3,000 yuan (US$492), sold on the mainland during the third quarter are said to be Samsung products. Meanwhile, Xiaomi, a mainland firm founded only in 2010, benefited from its latest budget smartphone — the Mi-3. In contrast to the success enjoyed by Samsung and Xiaomi, Apple’s sales this year have lagged behind the competition, with its market share dropping to 18 percent in the third quarter from 19.5 percent in the preceding three months, the report said.
