Japan to raise China air defense move in ASEAN meet, Kyodo says

Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will bring up aviation safety in discussions at a summit with leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in Tokyo in the middle of December, Kyodo news agency reported Thursday, citing an unnamed Japanese diplomat. According to the source, Abe will seek the support of his ASEAN counterparts in opposing China’s move to ask aircraft to submit flight plans in its newly established air defense identification zone over the East China Sea. By raising concern that China may set up the same air zone over the South China Sea, where China and several ASEAN members have overlapping claims, Japan will propose the signing of a joint statement seeking to preserve safety in the sky and the sea in the region during the summit, the report said.
