Shanghai eyes role as Asian reinsurance hub, paper says

China’s insurance watchdog will back efforts to make the Shanghai free trade zone a test bed for overseas investment as part of the city’s bid to become a national insurance capital hub, the Shanghai Securities News reported Thursday, citing China Insurance Regulatory Commission assistant chairman Liang Tao. Liang said the commission will also encourage Chinese-funded or Sino-foreign joint-venture reinsurance companies to set up in Shanghai and the development of local reinsurance professionals so that Shanghai can be the reinsurance hub of Asia, the report said.
