Emergency measures launched to cut emissions, Shanghai says

Shanghai has ordered 30 percent of the local government vehicles to be kept off the roads, in an emergency measure aimed at curbing the severe air pollution in the city, according to a posting Friday on the municipal government’s official microblog. The government launched emergency measures to reduce emissions as air quality in the city was recorded at 437 on the official Air Quality Index (AQI) Friday noon, indicating the most severe level of air pollution. Local authorities ordered a halt of outdoor construction and building work, and also urged key industrial firms to reduce or stop production activities.
