Rural land reform to protect farmer interests, website says

Ongoing rural land reforms are designed to increase farmers’ income, not to meet urban demand for space, government-backed China.com.cn reported Friday, citing Agriculture Minister Han Changfu {韓長賦}. The reforms will allow farmers to auction off land use rights, freeing up farmland for other uses under the country’s urbanization program. Han said in Beijing that the acquisition of farmland use rights by commercial and industrial interests should comply with the law. Han said that, for example, developers will not be allowed to build luxury villas and resorts on farmland. The authorities want private entities to develop modern agriculture in rural areas and help farmers prosper, Han was quoted as saying.
