China bans wild animals from official dinner tables, Xinhua says

Dishes containing shark’s fin, bird’s nest and other wild animal products should not be served in official reception dinners, the official Xinhua news agency reported on Sunday, citing a statement jointly issued by the general offices of the Communist Party of China’s Central Committee and the State Council. Cigarettes and up-market liquors are also not allowed to be served at official dinners, according to the statement. Local hosts are banned from giving cash, negotiable securities, souvenirs or local products as gifts for visiting officials, and officials below the provincial level must not stay in hotel suites during their business trips, the report said. The new rules are part of Beijing’s campaign against extravagance and corruption, it added.
