The Ministry of Education plans to remove English as a test subject from the “gaokao” or the national college entrance examination, China Daily reported late Sunday, citing a draft reform plan released by the ministry. Instead, students can take English tests more than once each year, and only the highest score will be counted, the report said. The new policy will allow students to choose when and how often they will take the tests, deputy minister Liu Limin was quoted as saying. Education experts also welcomed the proposal, saying it will allow for a more accurate assessment of the students’ ability. The reform will be piloted in several provinces from 2014, and expanded in 2017. By 2020, a new testing and recruiting system will be formed and promoted nationwide, the report said.
