China’s leaders applauded progress on the south-to-north water diversion project and called for further efforts to ensure the success of the remaining work, Xinhua reported Sunday. The first stage of the eastern route, costing more than 50 billion yuan (US$8.2 billion), has started supplying water to Jiangsu, Anhui and Shandong, the report said. Major work on the first stage of the middle route is expected to be finished by the end of the year, it said. The project will channel water from the south to drought-prone areas in the north via three routes — the eastern, middle and western sections.
