China Telecom Corp. Ltd. (00728.HK) has chosen Alcatel-Lucent (ALUA.PA) to supply its next-generation 4G technology for a nationwide trial of high-speed mobile broadband, Reuters news agency reported Thursday, citing a statement from the French telecommunications gear maker. Under the deal, Alcatel will supply 9,892 base stations in 12 Chinese provinces as well as “lightRadio” small-cell technology for urban or indoor areas, the report said. The latest contract comes around three months after Alcatel won a share of 4G contracts worth around US$3.2 billion from China Mobile Ltd. (00941.HK), which has more than 750 million subscribers. Chinese firms have secured more than half of the 4G contracts while Alcatel has cornered about 11 percent, it added.
