Tianjin to rein in new car license plates, Xinhua says

The Tianjin city government announced Sunday that it will rein in new motor car licenses, joining Beijing and Shanghai in an attempt to limit the local car population in order to alleviate traffic congestion and air pollution, Xinhua news agency reported Sunday. Effective Dec. 16, private car licenses must be issued either through a lottery system or an auction. From March 1 next year to January 10, 2015, the Tianjin government will also implement a road space rationing system based on plate numbers, the report said.
