Experts urge overcapacity link to performance, paper says

A think tank has suggested that local government officials be evaluated on their performance in tackling industrial overcapacity, China Daily reported Wednesday, citing an economic forum. Bigger efforts should be made to close inefficient production, even at the expense of jobs, experts were quoted as saying at the China Center for International Economic Exchanges forum. Local officials should take responsibility for reducing overcapacity and speeding up industrial upgrading because these issues have seriously restrained the economy, the report said, citing Gao Zhi, a researcher at the China Development Strategy Institute for Building Materials Industry.
