China is expanding its presence at the South Pole with a fourth antarctic base, China Daily reported Wednesday. Workers from its Zhongshan Station are building the Taishan summer field camp. Also, site inspections will be carried out on another research facility, the report said. The Taishan camp ensures that Chinese scientists will be able to conduct research over a wider range more safely, Qu Tanzhou, an official of the State Oceanic Administration, was quoted as saying.
