China Mobile Hong Kong Co. Ltd., the wholly owned subsidiary of China Mobile Ltd. (00941.HK), said Thursday that it is interested in taking part in next year’s auction for third-generation (3G) telecommunications spectrum in Hong Kong.
Tiger Lin, chairman of the Hong Kong subsidiary, said spectrum is crucial to the carrier’s telecom service and speed. He also said the company has bid in every spectrum auction in the past.
The Office of the Communications Authority said last month that it will auction off a third of the 3G spectrum held by each of the city’s four incumbent 3G mobile network operators in the fourth quarter next year.
The existing market players have been vocal critics of the plan, saying it will drive up the cost of providing the service and lower service quality.
