Free trade zones eyed along Silk Road economic belt, MoC says

China may set up more free trade zones in cities along the Silk Road economic belt (SREB) and the Maritime Silk Road, the Ministry of Commerce (MoC) said in a statement Wednesday. In September, President Xi Jinping {習近平} proposed to build a Silk Road economic belt to link the Asian country to its Central Asian neighbors. The government will improve the infrastructures, and strengthen cooperation with governments of the neighboring countries to boost bilateral trade. Ministry spokesperson Shen Danyang noted in the statement that total trade between China and countries along the SREB stood at US$549.5 billion last year, accounting for 14.2 percent of China’s total foreign trade.
