US President Barack Obama plans to nominate Sen. Max Baucus as the nation’s next ambassador to China, the South China Morning Post reported Thursday, citing unidentified American officials. If confirmed by the Senate, Baucus will replace Ambassador Gary Locke, who announced last month that he is stepping down. Baucus, 72, sidestepped questions about the ambassadorship when asked in the Capitol. “It’s not for me to comment on. … This happens every once in a while. Names get floated around,” he was quoted as saying.
