China is clamping down on lavish funerals and superstitious practices in the latest round of its anti-extravagance campaign, Shanghai Daily reported Friday. Government officials and party members have been told to set an example by keeping funerals simple and frugal. Also, the government is banning funeral parlors from residential areas and rituals from streets and public venues. Superstitious practices should be avoided, the report said, citing an official document. Chinese funerals are often treated as an opportunity to show off wealth and connections and highlight the achievements and status of the dead, setting a benchmark for competition among the living.
