China rejected 545,000 tons US corn this year, report says

China has so far this year rejected 545,000 metric tons of US corn containing an unapproved genetically modified strain, the Wall Street Journal reported Friday, citing the government’s quality-control watchdog. The corn was found in 12 batches of US shipments to ports in the provinces of Shenzhen, Fujian, Shandong, Guangdong, Zhejiang and Xiamen, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine was quoted as saying. The shipments contained MIR-162, a genetically modified insect-resistant strain permitted in the US and Europe, but not approved by China’s agriculture ministry, according to the report.
