A joint Chinese-US survey found that people in the two countries believe China and the United States can be rivals and partners at the same time, Xinhua reported Thursday, citing an article in the overseas edition of Communist Party mouthpiece People’s Daily. A minority of respondents — 15 percent at most on either side — said the two countries are enemies, according to a joint survey by the Beijing-based China Strategic Culture Promotion Association and the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington. But the trust of American entrepreneurs in China has declined over the past five years, possibly in part due to Americans’ fear that market barriers set by the Chinese government will grant unfair advantages to Chinese businesses, it said. The fall may also be due to Chinese enterprises’ ambitions to enter upstream industries, a more lucrative market previously dominated by Western companies.
