Qingdao cracks down on overseas solid waste, report says

Customs authorities in the Shandong city of Qingdao have rejected entry to more than 40 tonnes of undeclared waste plastics, Xinhua reported Sunday. The material was returned overseas in line with the General Administration of Customs’ Operation Green Fence crackdown on management of illegally imported garbage. Customs officials said delays from the illegal imports not only squeeze space and slow turnaround times at the port, but also lead to environmental contamination, the report said. Chinese law bans imports that cannot be used as raw materials or safely recycled.
