Alibaba spin-off to challenge US cloud giants, paper says

E-commerce conglomerate Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. will expand its cloud-computing services to overseas markets in March in a challenge to global giants Amazon.com Inc. and Microsoft Corp., China Daily reported Wednesday. Aliyun, an Alibaba spin-off, will set up data centers outside China to provide cloud-computing services to local enterprises and Chinese companies’ overseas operations, company director Zhang Jing was quoted as saying. Aliyun will become the first Chinese company to enter the overseas public cloud segment, days after Amazon announced the launch of similar services in China, the report said, adding that it may team up with local telecommunication carriers to skirt local regulatory restrictions.
