More than 435,000 low-income people in southwest China’s Tibet Autonomous Region will receive cash subsidies to celebrate three major festivals, Xinhua news agency reported on Tuesday. The assistance will be provided before Dec. 31 in time for New Year’s Day, the Lunar New Year on Jan. 31 and the Tibetan New Year on March 2. This is the sixth year in a row that low-income people in the region will receive subsidy, and this year they will receive cash, unlike in previous years when they received shopping cards. Urban low-income residents will each receive 900 yuan (US$148.20) while rural residents will receive 300 yuan, the report said.
