Shenzhen Kangtai Biological Products Co. Ltd. has suspended its operations after it and two other pharmaceutical firms were said to have caused the death of 11 babies with their hepatitis B vaccine products, 21st Century Business Herald reported Thursday. Authorities have temporarily banned the use of the vaccine made by Kangtai after the cases were reported, it said. The ongoing investigation into the case may take at least 20 days, Li Guoqing, drug supervision department director of the China Food and Drug Administration (CFDA), was quoted as saying. Other qualified vaccine producers will be encouraged to increase production during the period as Kangtai accounts for more than half of the market share of hepatitis B vaccines, Li was cited as saying.
