The Sichuan government has decided to allow private firms to participate in the construction and operation of two railway projects, Xinhua news agency reported Thursday, citing the province’s development and reform commission. Provincial authorities may in future allow private firms to gain controlling stakes in such projects if conditions become mature, the report said. The commission chief Tang Limin was quoted as saying that he hopes the opening up of the two projects can set a successful example for social capital to play a role in speeding up the provincial economy. One of the projects is the 20 billion yuan (US$3.29 billion) intercity railway connecting Neijiang, Zigong and Yibin, while the other is a section of the railway connecting Longchang and Guizhou province’s Huangtong.
