Subsidy raised for couples who lost only child, paper says

Parents who have lost their only child will get more compensation and enjoy other benefits such as preferential access to rest homes and housing, China Daily reported on Friday, citing an announcement by the National Health and Family Planning Commission. Starting in 2014, the standard subsidy will increase to 340 yuan (US$56) per person per month for urban couples who lost their only child but have not adopted or given birth to another, while the subsidy for those in rural areas will be 170 yuan, the report said, adding that the wife must be at least 49 years old.
