President Xi Jinping said on Thursday the Communist Party of China will continue to be guided by Mao Zedong Thought in pursuing the nation’s rejuvenation, the official Xinhua news agency reported. Commemorating the 120th birth anniversary of the late Chinese leader, Xi said Mao was “a great patriot and national hero” and the core of the first generation of Chinese leadership. But he stressed that a correct historical view must be adopted to appraise a historical figure. “[We] cannot worship them like gods or refuse to allow people to point out and correct their errors just because they are great; neither can we totally repudiate them and erase their historical feats just because they made mistakes,” Xi was quoted as saying. Mao was born on Dec. 26, 1893 and died on Sept. 9, 1976. Various activities were held nationwide on Thursday to mark the occasion, the report said.
