China per-capita arable land at half world average, govt says

China had just over 1,000 square meters of arable land per person by the end of 2009, less than half the world average of 2,253 square meters per person, government-backed news portal China.com.cn reported Monday, citing data from the second national land survey released Monday. China’s average was about 47 square meters per person less than the level seen in the first national land survey in 1996. The survey also showed that much of the land has become heavily polluted and no longer suitable for farming, the report said.
