Illegal rare earth trade flourishes in Guangdong, Xinhua says

Guangdong has emerged as a hot spot for the illegal trade in rare earths, Xinhua reported Sunday, citing the results of a joint crackdown by eight ministries. The crackdown led by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Ministry of Land and Resources and the State Administration of Taxation found the illegal trade was particularly serious in the cities of Heyuan, Meizhou and Jieyang. The team investigated 11 rare earth companies and found that of the 3,657 metric tons they had sold this year, more than 2,000 metric tons did not have proof of origin, the report said.
