Rough time for ‘Caliph Ibrahim’ over watch choice

There are only three known recorded sightings of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and the latest one of the self-anointed Caliph Ibrahim of the so-called Islamic State in Iraq has set tongues wagging, not least because of his selection of timepiece.

When he made his first public appearance at Mosul’s Great Mosque on Friday he may have been calling on the world’s Muslims to “obey” him as “the leader who presides over you” but attention was on the ill-fitting chrome watch setting off his black robes and turban, the Telegraph reported Sunday.

From a video posted online on the weekend, the watch appears to be either a Rolex, Sekonda or Omega Seamaster, all of which are pricey options, something Twitter users did not hesitate to take him to task for.

But the Iraqi government denied that the man in the video was Baghdadi, sticking by its claim that he had been wounded in a military operation, the report said.
