China eyes consolidation of military regions, paper says

China is said to be considering a proposal to consolidate its seven major military regions into five in an effort to swiftly respond to any military crisis, Want Daily said Thursday, citing a report by Japan’s Yomiuri Shimbun on Wednesday but not confirmed by any official source. Under the proposal, each military region will have its own armed forces comprising an army, a navy and an air force. The current military regions are Jinan, Nanjing, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Lanzhou, Beijing and Shenyang, with the last four to be merged into two under the plan, the report said.
