China ‘needs better GM food label rules’, paper says

A biotechnology researcher has called on China to improve its regulations on labeling genetically modified food, saying the existing regulations fail to inform consumers, China Daily reported Wednesday. Rules state that products containing GM ingredients should be labeled, but the reality of protecting consumers is much more difficult, according to Huang Dafang, from the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences’ Biotechnology Research Institute. “Many foods … such as cakes, cookies and candies as well as food in restaurants, lack clear labels even though some are made with cooking oil containing GM ingredients,” Huang said.
