Japan ship rescues Chinese balloonist near Diaoyu, NHK says

A Japanese patrol ship on Wednesday rescued a Chinese man after he failed in an attempt to land on one of the disputed Diaoyu islands (Senkaku in Japan) using a hot-air balloon, Japan’s public broadcaster NHK reported Thursday. The coast guard was quoted as saying they sent patrol vessels to the area after receiving a request from Taiwanese authorities and handed over the man to a Chinese patrol ship in the evening after negotiations through diplomatic channels. The man, who identified himself as a 35-year-old cook from northern China’s Hebei province, said he took off on the balloon from Fujian province Wednesday, Kyodo news agency said in another report Thursday.
