Rural telecom upgrade target achieved in 2013, MIIT says

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) said it spearheaded efforts by China Telecom Corp. Ltd. (00728.HK), China Mobile Ltd. (00941.HK) and China United Network Communications Group Co. Ltd. (00762.HK, 600050.CN) for direct investment of over 6 billion yuan (US$991.882 million) in rural telecom infrastructure in 2013, meeting the annual target, according to a statement posted on the government portal Thursday. The investment has lifted broadband penetration in rural areas significantly and also helped add new telephone lines, it said. The three carriers have also made broadband internet available to some 5,200 secondary and primary schools in remote rural towns, the report said.
