5,586 km of new rail lines put into service in 2013, govt says

China put into service a combined 5,586 kilometers of new rail lines in 2013, the government said in a report on its official website Monday, citing data from China Railway Corp. (CRC). Of this, high-speed rail lines accounted for 1,627 kilometers, bringing the combined length of the country’s high-speed rail network to 11,000 kilometers, the longest in the world. The number of rail passengers last year reached a record 2.07 billion, up 10.3 percent from 2012, while the volume of cargo transported by rail reached 3.22 billion metric tons, the CRC data showed.
