China to subsidize low-toxicity pesticide, paper says

The government will provide subsidies to farmers that use pesticide with low toxicity and low residue content, Shanghai Securities News reported Tuesday, citing a source from the Ministry of Agriculture. The subsidies will be offered under a pilot program in 10 provinces and may be given directly to farmers. Excessive use of fertilizers has caused food safety and environmental pollution problems in the country, the report said. The government may also promote the use of biopesticides.
