At least 616 old elevators in downtown residential buildings in Shanghai have failed to pass safety evaluation tests, the Shanghai Daily reported Tuesday, citing the city’s municipal bureau of quality and technical supervision. Most of the problematic lifts in residential apartments in Changning, Huangpu, Putuo, Zhabei and Xuhui districts and the Pudong New Area have been used for more than 10 years, the report said. The bureau has launched an extensive overhaul of the city’s elevators, and promised to issue new safety standards for elevators before July.
