More than 15,000 foreign visitors have taken advantage of a scheme launched in Shanghai last year offering 72-hour visa-free stays in the city for international transit passengers, Shanghai Daily reported on Thursday. The largest number of travelers taking up the offer came from the United States, it said, citing Shanghai Exit and Entry Frontier Inspection authorities. About 2,300 US visitors used the service, followed by Australians and Germans. Take-up began slowly in the first quarter of last year, but picked up later as the policy became more widely known among foreign travelers, it said.
