Wang urges Japan leaders to respect human conscience

Foreign Minister Wang Yi {王毅} urged Japanese leaders to respect human conscience and uphold international justice in their dealings with other countries, according to a transcript of the Chinese official’s remarks to the Qatari news broadcaster Al Jazeera in an interview released on the ministry’s website Thursday. Wang was referring to Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s December visit to the Yasukuni Shrine, which commemorates Japan’s war dead including World War II criminals. He said the visit is not just Japan’s internal issue as it signaled an intention to justify the nation’s acts during the war. Meanwhile, Abe told a television interview Wednesday that he will strive to clear misunderstandings resulting from his recent visit to the shrine, Kyodo news agency reported Thursday.
